More than a half of 2010 has
already passed but Bollywood is
yet to witness a blockbuster in
the league of say a 3 Idiots.
What's worse most of its keenly-
anticipated offerings bit dust
leaving a terrible taste of
disappointment in the viewer's
mouth.
Here's a look at ten of the worst
Bollywood movies of the year so
far:
1.Kites
For all its photogenic splendour
and hyped chemistry between
Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori,
Anurag Basu's ambitiously-scaled
romance is completely devoid of
a valid storyline or gripping
interaction.
And that's lame on account of
Basu's much-celebrated narrative
proficiency. Even Duggu's singing
and dancing skills or Rakesh
Roshan's lucky 'K' could not have
salvaged this one.
2.Veer
Going by Salman Khan's tweets,
writing isn't exactly Salman
Khan's best gifts. That explains
the story behind Anil Sharma's
Veer.
While Wanted, despite its far-
fetched temperament, works
purely on the merit of its brawny
star's charisma to pull off a
pedestrian superhero, Veer goes
overboard on an epic scale (quite
literally so) with its jarring
concepts, costumes and
catastrophes. Add to this some
seriously bad acting thrown in
good measure.
3.Sadiyan
Just when you thought
Bollywood's Punjabi stereotypes
are done and over with comes
the alarmingly dated Sadiyaan. In
this soppy Indo-Pak melodrama
which packs in as many sub-
plots as it possibly can, there's
not a single moment of above
average.
In fact, the only real purpose this
Raj Kanwar-helmed exercise in
boredom serves is to launch
Shatrughan Sinha's surprisingly
wooden son, Luv into movies.
4.Pankh
There's experimental and there's
erratic. With Pankh, Sudipto
Chattopadhyaya steps into a
dark, unexplored territory of a
disturbed individual's sexuality
but seems too preoccupied in
highlighting his quirky, visual
fantasies to convey anything else.
A complex subject like this
deserved to be handled with a lot
more depth and sensitivity
instead of pointlessly hovering
around its startling attributes.
5.Rann
For its diatribe against the media
and sensationalist journalism,
Ram Gopal Varma's Rann suffers
from the very issues it points
fingers at.
Half-baked ideas, lack of
research, blasphemous waste of
Big B's talents and dreadful
performances from everyone else
mar this otherwise relevant
subject from being the all
important wake-up call to the
'fellowship of breaking news.'
6.Bum Bum Bole
Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi is
one of the most respected names
in cinema. And Children of
Heaven is one of his much-loved
modern-day classics.
But when filmmaker
Priyadarshan decided to rope in
child prodigy Darsheel Safary for
its official remake, one expected
nothing short of awe-inspiring.
The end result, however, is
shockingly tacky. While Darsheel
is as effective as this sloppily-
written and excessively
sentimental adaptation allows
him to be, his co-stars are clearly
in uninspired mode.
7.Shaapit
The Ramsay brand of horror
returns sans the B-movie tag in
the form of Vikram Bhatt's
Shaapit. And so you have the
Ghulam director reliving his Raaz
days, sans the chartbusting
soundtrack, provided by riotous
tantriks and other such rip-
roaring antics to convey a state
of obligatory chills and thrills.
Surely Udit Narayan's sprightly
young boy Aditya deserved
better than that.
8.Teen Patti
It's not every day some
filmmaker gets a chance to get
Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben
Kingsley to share a frame. Too
bad director Leena Yadav wastes
this perfect opportunity with her
watered-down take on
Hollywood's 21.
What could have been a thrilling
episode of greed and genius
against the backdrop of
gambling turns out to be a
tedious yarn of hare-brained
logic dressed in the garb of
showy intellect.
9.Housefull
It may have made big bucks at
the box-office but Sajid Khan's
awfully obnoxious comedy is
anything but fun.
Pray, what's amusing about
pretty girls with no acting skills
in skimpy clothes or the usually
reliable comics stumbling all over
the place in the name of gags?
Chaos is only an element of
humour.
It's high time Mr Khan stopped
passing it off as the real deal.
10.Milenge Milenge
Who cares about a movie that's
as fresh as a five-year old can of
baked beans lying in the fridge?
Apparently, not even the cast. In
an age where stars do
everything from giving free
haircuts to mall-hopping in every
second city, neither Shahid
Kapoor nor Kareena Kapoor
came forth to do basic
promotions for Boney Kapoor's
long-delayed Milenge Milenge.
Turns out the audience too
didn't care to sit through a
nauseatingly dull and dated rip-
off of Hollywood's Serendipity.

Ramayana by Bill Gates...
(funny)
When Bill Gates was in India,
he had a chance 2 listen
Ramayana from Vajpayee.
After returning 2 US he wrote
it in his personal Diary which
has been recently found
(courtesy PTI). These are
excerpts from his diary:
Ramayana by Bill Gates...
LAN, LAN ago, in the SYSTEM of
I/O-dhya, there ruled a
PROCESSOR named DOS-rat.
Once he EXECUTED a great
sacrifice PROGRAM after which
his queens gave an OUTPUT of
four SUNs - RAM, LSIman, BUG-
rat and SED-rughana.
RAM the eldest was a
MICROCHIP with excellent
MEMORY. His brothers,
however, were only
PERIPHERAL ICs. Once when
RAM was only 16MB, he
married princess C ta.
12years passed and DOS-rat
decided to INSTALL RAM as his
successor.However,Queen CIE/
CAE(Kayegayee), who was once
offered a boon by DOS-rat for a
lifesaving HELP COMMAND, took
this opportunity at the
instigation of her BIOSed maid
and insisted that her son Bug-
rat be INSTALLED and that RAM
be CUT-N-PASTED to the forest
for 14 years. At this cruel and
unexpected demand, a SURGE
passed through DOS-rat and he
CRASHED like unstable version
of AI MSN does in intel.
RAM agreed to LOG INTO forest
and C ta insisted to LOGIN with
him. LSI-man also resolved on
LOGGING IN with his brother.
The forest was the dwelling of
SPARCnakha, the TRAN-SISTOR
of RAW-van, PROCESSOR of LAN-
ka. Attracted by RAM, she
proposed that he should marry
her. RAM, politely declined,
perceiving C ta to be his
SOURCE CODE. She hastened to
kill her but LSI-man cut her
inportant PERIPHERALS.
Weeping, SPARC-nakha fled to
LAN-ka, where RAW-van,
moved by TRAN-SIS TOR s
plight, approached his uncle
MAR-icha. MAR-icha
REPROGRAMED himself to form
a golden stag and drew RAM
deep into the forest. Finally,
RAM shot the deer, which, with
his last breath, cried out for
LSI-man in voice of RAM s
SOUND CARD. Fooled by this
VIRTUAL RAM SOUND, C ta
urged LSI-man to his brother s
aid. Catching the opportunity,
RAW-van DELINKED C ta from
her LIBRARY and changed her
ROOT DIRECTORY to LAN-ka.

RAM and LSI-man started
SEARCHING for the missing C ta
all over the forest. They made
friendship with
the forest SYSTEM
ADMINISTRATOR Akshat sorry...
SU-greev and his powerful co-
processor Ha-NEUMAN. who
agreed to help RAM. SU-greev
ordered his PROGRAMMERS to
use powerful SEARCH
techniques learnt in CS130 to
FIND the missing C ta. His
PROGRAMMERS SEARCHED
allaround the INTER-
NETworked forests. Many tried
to EXCITE the birds and animals
not to forget the
WEBCRAWLERS (Insects) and
tried to INFOSEEK something
about C ta. Some of them even
shouted YAA-HOO but they all
ended up with NO FOUND
MESSAGES Google, Lycos
nothing was left untouched.
The only thing they forgot was
to mail iitcse01 & get PTI s
help. Ha-NEUMAN then devised
a RISCy TECHNOLOGY and used
it to cross the seas at an
astonishing CLOCK SPEED. Soon
Ha-NEUMAN DOWNLOADED
himself into LAN-ka. Ha-
NEUMAN
found C ta under a brown -
green (as Brahma will call it)
TREE STRUCTURE Ha-NEUMAN
used the LOGIN ID (ring) to
identify himself to C ta. After
DECRYPTING THE KEY, C ta
asked him to send STATUS_OK
MESSAGE to RAM.
Meanwhile all raakshasa BUGS
around C ta captured Ha-
NEUMAN to DELETE him using
everything including
Ctrl-Alt-Del. But Ha-NEUMAN
spread chaos by spreading
VIRUS Fire . Ha-NEUMAN
pressed ESCAPE from LAN-
kaand & conveyed all the
STATUS MESSAGES to RAM and
SU-greev. RAW-wan decided to
take RAM head-on. One of the
RAW-wan s SUN almost
DELETED LSI-man with a
Brahma -astra. But Ha-NEUMAN
resorted to some ACTIVE-
Xgradients and REFORMATTED
LSI-man. RAM used the SOURCE
CODE secrets of RAW-wan and
wiped out RAW-wan s
presence on earth. Later, RAM
got INSTALLED in I/O-dhya and
spreaded his USER FRIENDLY
PROGRAMS to all USERS and
everyone lived happily ever
after, playing & enjoying AOE.

World is talking about india
Last week, TIME magazine
carried a story by its writer Joel
Stein entitled “My Own Private
India”. His piece on Indian
Americans didn’t go down well
with the Indian community
settled there. In India too, those
who read the article were critical
of his article. Before the issue
could snowball into anything
larger, the magazine came out
with a public apology and said
didn’t mean to offend Indians .
So this week, I surfed
international news sites to see
what news of India was making
the headlines.
In the World section of The New
York Times, Kashmir violence is
featured as a slide show with
little details of the reason of the
conflict. But what is more
prominent is a long article on
Switzerland being a preferred
travel destination for Indian
tourists, all thanks to Bollywood
and one man in particular, the
eternal romantic, Yash Chopra.
But looks like Switzerland is
getting stiff competition from an
equally breathtaking country-
New Zealand. The recently
released ‘I hate luv storys’ chose
to skip the Swiss alps for the
New Zealand countryside.
Even before the “jaadu ki
jhappi” was popularised by
Sanjay Dutt, one person had
been preaching its healing
powers. Amma (as she ’s
popularly known) is said to cure
the ailing, comfort the lonely
with just a simple hug.
Huffington Post features “India’s
hugging saint” in their Living
section. This comes in the wake
of sainthood in India coming
under the scanner, due to the
likes of Swami Nityananda and
his shenanigans.
“‘Shining India’ makes its poor
pay the price of hosting
Commonwealth Games “,
screams a headline in The
Guardian . With the CWG fast
approaching and the demolition
drive continuing to displace
many who ’re in its way, we ask
– what exactly are the
Commonwealth Games about?
India as a tourist destination, an
elaborate eyewash to lure in
more tourists or India ’s sincere
attempt at making its presence
felt in the global sports arena?
The Daily Telegraph, Australia,
has a travel feature on the
world ’s best hotels. And guess
what, of the 11 hotels in the list,
two are from India- the Oberoi
Amarvilas and Oberoi Vanyavilas.

The truth about Sakshi and Dhoni
--- She came, he
saw, she conquered. And the
most ironic part: Sakshi Singh
Rawat didn't even have to make
an effort to capture the interest
of India's most eligible bachelor.
The two first met at the Taj
Bengal in Kolkata in November-
December, 2007. Yudhajit Dutta,
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's
manager and one of his closest
friends, and Sakshi, who was
interning at the hotel, were pals.
India were playing Pakistan at
the Eden Gardens and staying at
the Taj, and Dutta dropped in to
meet Dhoni. He also called Sakshi
up and asked her to stop by. It
was, coincidentally, Sakshi's last
day at the Taj Bengal, so some
would say their meeting was
fated.
Sakshi dropped in, was
introduced to Dhoni and they
went their separate ways.
Unknown to Sakshi, Dhoni asked
Dutta for her phone number and
texted her.
In fact, say sources, Sakshi did
not believe it was Dhoni texting
her when he first did. It took a
few months of serious wooing
on Dhoni's part before they
started dating in March 2008.
She attended Dhoni's birthday
bash in 2008 in Mumbai, but they
did not spend time alone till
Dhoni took an hour off from his friends to drop her back to a relative's place.

Delhi unsafe for women?
66 pc women faced sexual harassment last year: Survey
Two out of three women in Delhi
have suffered sexual harassment
at least 2-5 times in the last year.
This was revealed in a joint
survey report released by NGO
Jagori, United Nations
Development Fund for Women
and UN Habitat.
The survey 'Safe Cities Baseline
Survey- Delhi 2010' gathered and
analysed information about the
nature and forms of gender
based violence and harassment
faced by women, the role of
governing agencies and the
police in safeguarding women's
rights and societal perceptions
and attitudes towards sexual
harassment. It had a total sample
of 5010 people. This survey is the
first of its kind and is unique for
including the perceptions and
experiences of men regarding
the issue. It looked at
harassment of women in Delhi ,
highlighting concerns relating to
public spaces in the city.
More than 80 per cent of the
respondents reported incidents
of verbal harassment, with 45
per cent women reporting
incidents of stalking. Women
claimed to suffer maximum
harassment in the marketplace
followed closely by metro
stations and areas around
schools and colleges. Roadsides
and public transport are places
where women are most
vulnerable to harassment. The
survey found school and college
students to be most vulnerable to
harassment, though women
across all categories face
harassment.
The main reasons for sexual
harassment identified by the
survey include lack of gender
friendly and functional
infrastructure such as adequate
lighting, side walks and safe
public toilets; open usage of
alcohol and drugs by men; and
the lack of effective and visible
police presence. 54 per cent of
women reported feeling unsafe
and vulnerable in crowded public
transport and bus stops.
Female respondents expressed a
dismal lack of confidence in the
police to curb harassment, with
only 0.8 per cent reporting such
incidents to the authorities. The
vast majority responded to
harassment by confronting the
perpetrator themselves or by
seeking help from family and
friends. The lack of faith in the
police extended across all
occupational groups.
The report on the findings of the
survey included a number of
recommendations like improving
public infrastructure such as
streetlights,sidewalks and privacy
of public women's toilets;
publicising the use of helplines,
deploying policemen and
sensitising the public.

First wimbledon tournament
On 9 July 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, then an outer suburb of London. Twenty-one amateurs showed up to compete in the Gentlemen's Singles tournament, the only event at the first Wimbledon. The winner was to take home a 25-guinea trophy.
Tennis has its origins in a 13th- century French handball game called jeu de paume, or "game of the palm," from which developed an indoor racquet-and-ball game called real, or "royal," tennis. Real tennis grew into lawn tennis, which was played outside on grass and enjoyed a surge of popularity in the late 19th century.

How google searches
In the beginning the Internet was but a confusing mass of
documents. Finding information,by searching the World Wide
Web, was nearly impossible until the first search engines came
along. Early search engines were like rudimentary life-forms
(Remember Yahoo! Search andAlta Vista?).
They got the job done, but as more people gained access to
the web, their limitations an
dependence on the information that content creators put on so-
called meta tags (strings of text that identified the content of the
page in the source code) meant that such engines were liable to
be abused.
Into this fast-expanding, yet messy space came Google. To cut
a long story short, what Google did was organise information a
lot better. Instead of depending on the text of a web page to
determine the search results, it determined the page's influence
using a variety of factors-including how many times a
page had been viewed or linked to. From those early days, Google
made searching the Internet reliable and over the past decade
has grown into the behemoth it is today.
But there is more to the Internet than Google and more to search
as well. Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer told BT five years ago
that Google was just a flash in the pan, as Microsoft readied its
(then) latest search engine.
Microsoft did not get too far then, but laid the foundation for
an effort that churned out Bing, its search engine launched last
year. The engine uses a process similar to Google's 'PageRank'
algorithm and gets a boost from technology tailored to throw up
relevant results. The result: it has garnered one-fourth market
share in the United States.
Google is not standing still. "In the early days, much of the
Internet was static, your 'web crawlers' would go out every few
days, sometimes even weeks to find information. Today, in the
age of Twitter, the Internet happens in 'real time' and we
have to reflect that," said Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow, present
at the company's recent Science of Search conference in Tokyo.
The way it delivers this is complex: New search
technologies look for statistical patterns while determining the
importance of one particular tweet message over thousands
of others as well as the number of followers the person who
wrote that tweet has. Juxtapose the volume of tweets - 2.7 million
every hour-and the brute force of the new technology and servers
that power it become apparent. That and Google's focus onsearch helps it stay top dog
despite challenges in China(Baidu is No. 1) and Japan
(Yahoo! is ahead in popularity).
Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have spoken of their
fears of being ousted by a newcomer. That challenge could
come in the form of the likes of Wolfram Alpha, which queries a
structured database for answers. So, ask it about the 16th
President of the United States and it throws up not a link but a
page of facts on Abraham Lincoln. The scope of the
engine's results is limited given itis still a project in progress.
Example: A search for "World Cup" assumes it is a gene and
gives you a reference genetic sequence. Still, structured
searches are being closely watched.
Elsewhere, to catch up with Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! are
touting new contextual search services that give you search
results based on the page you are on. For instance, if you are
reading about Barack Obama's actions in the Gulf of Mexico BP
oil spill, highlighting "Obama" will not do a generic search for
Obama but for the US President and the oil spill. This is still a beta
(test) service rolled out to a few users.
Google, meanwhile, is also taking search to mobile devices - a
trend that its executives underscored at the Tokyo
conference. Google's voice search is today enabled on most
smartphones. Goggles allows users to take a picture from a
mobile phone and gives you a result on the image. Google plans
to make both mobile voice and image search faster and is
throwing a lot of its engineering resources behind that.
And its needs to. Google's biggest rival here is not Microsoft
but Apple whose iPhone is the dominant smartphone platform
in terms of mindspace. Apple recently bought Siri, which
makes a "mobile personal assistant" application that works
through voice commands. Silicon Valley is betting that the "human-
computer interface" will increasingly move away from
text to voice and images.
The world's top search engine also has on hand projects that
revel in the technology they use even if the revenue upsides are
not evident. In Tokyo, Alan Eustace, Google's Head of
Engineering, talked about a "Universal Communicator", an
idea rip-off from the Star Trek series. Here, an application on a
smartphone, with the help of machine translation, will be able
to translate any language spoken into it and into any other
selected. Singhal was even more bullish.
He spoke of a future where all Google services seamlessly
integrate into one another, where route-planning using
Google maps will take information from the web and
warn you in advance of traffic jams or deals at a mall five
minutes ahead of you and the like. Online search clearly has
some way to go.

Finance recap: india marching forward
It was a new beginning for
corporate India post the
downturn. Developed nations like
US and UK were still recovering
from one of the worst
recessions. But, India seems to
be looking forward.
Government ’s timely intervention
helped India pass the stress test.
This year, the focus has been to
maintain the growth momentum.
The planning commission
pegged India ’s GDP at 9% for the
current financial year. Now it was
Finance Minister Pranab
Mukherjee ’s plan to lay the
foundation in his budget.
Budget 2010
Government’s focus on aam
aadmi continued. The highlight
of the budget was the widening
of Income Tax slab, giving the
taxpayers some extra money to
spend. The much pending Direct
Tax Code and GST were
postponed and are expected to
be implemented from April 2011.
For corporate India, there was
nothing big to cheer about. The
Unique ID project was set up and
the government appointed
former Infosys CEO Nandan
Nilenkani to lead it. The Finance
Minister allocated Rs 1900cr fund
for UID.
Price rise and RBI
The next task for the government
was to battle inflation. With
double-digit inflation, RBI had a
task on its hand. It hiked key
policy rates along with the cash
reserve ratio (CRR) by 25 basis
points each in its annual
monetary policy review meet on
April 20. However this move
didn ’t impact the interest rates,
as banks refrained from hiking
home loan rates. Food inflation
for the month of May 2010 was
at 10.16%. RBI ’s monetary
review for the first quarter is on
July 27 and experts believe that
the Central Bank might may hike
key rates to tame inflation.
Recovery
India Inc is smiling. It ended the
fiscal with a bang recording the
highest earnings growth in more
than three years for the March
quarter. With good profits, hiring
activity is at a two-year high.
Salary hikes and bonus were
back on card. Manpower Inc, said
42% of Indian employers expect
to expand their workforce in the
third quarter, citing a survey of
5,371 companies. Hiring in IT/
ITeS and insurance sectors has
seen maximum movement with
the index moving up by 13 per
cent and 15 per cent.
3G is finally here
After years of delay, third
generation bidding rounds
culminated in a final aggregate
pan-Indian 3G licence value of $
3.6 billion. For the government it
was a reason to cheer as it cut
fiscal deficit to nearly 4.9 per cent
from 5.5 per cent of GDP
projected in the Budget. No
single operator managed to bag
all 22 circles on offer. The
broadband wireless auction
brought in some more cash into
the kitty, swelling the
government exchequer to Rs.38,
543.31 crore.
Sebi-IRDA face-off
It can be termed as a battle
between regulators. In April,
market regulator Security
Exchange Board of India (SEBI)
banned issue of all new ULIPs
from 14 insurance companies
stating that they have not
registered their product with
SEBI, so they can ’t issue new
ULIPs. However, after almost two
months of turf war between the
two regulators, the government
passed an ordinance that
granted full regulatory control of
the Unit Linked Insurance
Product (ULIP) market to IRDA.
Read Deepak Shenoy’s column on
whether you should stay
invested or exit from ULIPs.
India: The next auto hub
‘Small things have their own
peculiar charm’. This seems to be
true for carmakers in India as
leading automakers plan to enter
the small car segment. For Tatas,
the journey from Singur to
Sanand seemed to have paid off
with its production facility for
Nano being inaugurated. Car
sales zoomed to a ten-year high
in May as rising incomes and a
rapidly expanding economy
offset the impact of price
increases. But the car that
fulfilled the middle class dream
would no longer be
manufactured. India’s first small
car, the Maruti 800 was phased
out from April due to the new
emission norms.
Ambani Saga ends
After five years of a bitter feud
and holding government energy
policy hostage that even
discouraged foreign investment
in oil and gas, the Ambani
brothers called a truce on May
23, 2010 by ending a non-
competition agreement that was
the source of acrimony between
them. The new pact not only sent
RIL shares soaring, it soothed the
investors ’ nerves as public
welcomed the verdict and the
Ambanis ’ move.
On May 7, 2010, a three-judge
bench of the Supreme Court
headed by Chief Justice K G
Balakrishnan gave a verdict that
the Ambani family MoU dividing
KG-D6 gas between the brothers’
group firms was not binding,
legally or technically. He asked
both the parties to renegotiate
and sort out their differences but
within the government ’s gas
utilization policy. This was seen
as a veritable win for Mukesh
and RIL over brother Anil.
Mittal’s African dream comes
true
After two failed attempts to enter
the South African market, Sunil
Bharti Mittal was successful the
third time. In the largest telecom
takeover by any Indian firm,
Bharti Airtel signed a deal with
Kuwait-based Zain Telecom to
buy its African business for $10.7
billion (about Rs 48,000 crore).
The acquisition, the second
largest by an Indian entity after
Tatas ’ Corus deal, would make
Sunil Mittal-led Bharti the world’s
seventh largest mobile operator
with a total subscriber base of
about 179 million. It would have
estimated revenues of $13 billion.
Fuel Deregulation
In a hugely debated step, the
government deregulated fuel
prices under the
recommendations by the Kirit
Parekh Committee. Petrol prices
will no longer be subsidized,
although diesel, kerosene and
LPG will continue to be
subsidized, albeit at a slightly
lower level. Few analysts feel that
the step might further increase
the inflation. However in spite of
stiff opposition from its allies and
BJP, the Prime Minsiter said the
decision was a much-needed
reform.
Choppy Markets
Robust economy and corporate
earnings drove the Sensex to a
ten-week high on June 26. The
midcap and small cap companies
have outperformed the blue-chip
companies in the fiscal so far. But
overall theSensex has been
hovering around 17,000 this
year. Market analysts predict the
Sensex to see an earnings
growth of 25-30% this fiscal.
Gold prices didn’t ease much and
reached another high of $1260/
ounce.

for the month of May 2010 was
at 10.16%. RBI ’s monetary
review for the first quarter is on
July 27 and experts believe that
the Central Bank might may hike
key rates to tame inflation.
Recovery
India Inc is smiling. It ended the
fiscal with a bang recording the
highest earnings growth in more
than three years for the March
quarter. With good profits, hiring
activity is at a two-year high.
Salary hikes and bonus were
back on card. Manpower Inc, said
42% of Indian employers expect
to expand their workforce in the
third quarter, citing a survey of
5,371 companies. Hiring in IT/
ITeS and insurance sectors has
seen maximum movement with
the index moving up by 13 per
cent and 15 per cent.
3G is finally here
After years of delay, third
generation bidding rounds
culminated in a final aggregate
pan-Indian 3G licence value of $
3.6 billion. For the government it
was a reason to cheer as it cut
fiscal deficit to nearly 4.9 per cent
from 5.5 per cent of GDP
projected in the Budget. No
single operator managed to bag
all 22 circles on offer. The
broadband wireless auction
brought in some more cash into
the kitty, swelling the
government exchequer to Rs.38,
543.31 crore.
Sebi-IRDA face-off
It can be termed as a battle
between regulators. In April,
market regulator Security
Exchange Board of India (SEBI)
banned issue of all new ULIPs
from 14 insurance companies
stating that they have not
registered their product with
SEBI, so they can ’t issue new
ULIPs. However, after almost two
months of turf war between the
two regulators, the government
passed an ordinance that
granted full regulatory control of
the Unit Linked Insurance
Product (ULIP) market to IRDA.
Read Deepak Shenoy’s column on
whether you should stay
invested or exit from ULIPs.
India: The next auto hub
‘Small things have their own
peculiar charm’. This seems to be
true for carmakers in India as
leading automakers plan to enter
the small car segment. For Tatas,
the journey from Singur to
Sanand seemed to have paid off
with its production facility for
Nano being inaugurated. Car
sales zoomed to a ten-year high
in May as rising incomes and a
rapidly expanding economy
offset the impact of price
increases. But the car that
fulfilled the middle class dream
would no longer be
manufactured. India’s first small
car, the Maruti 800 was phased
out from April due to the new
emission norms.
Ambani Saga ends
After five years of a bitter feud
and holding government energy
policy hostage that even
discouraged foreign investment
in oil and gas, the Ambani
brothers called a truce on May
23, 2010 by ending a non-
competition agreement that was
the source of acrimony between
them. The new pact not only sent
RIL shares soaring, it soothed the
investors ’ nerves as public
welcomed the verdict and the
Ambanis ’ move.
On May 7, 2010, a three-judge
bench of the Supreme Court
headed by Chief Justice K G
Balakrishnan gave a verdict that
the Ambani family MoU dividing
KG-D6 gas between the brothers’
group firms was not binding,
legally or technically. He asked
both the parties to renegotiate
and sort out their differences but
within the government ’s gas
utilization policy. This was seen
as a veritable win for Mukesh
and RIL over brother Anil.
Mittal’s African dream comes
true
After two failed attempts to enter
the South African market, Sunil
Bharti Mittal was successful the
third time. In the largest telecom
takeover by any Indian firm,
Bharti Airtel signed a deal with
Kuwait-based Zain Telecom to
buy its African business for $10.7
billion (about Rs 48,000 crore).
The acquisition, the second
largest by an Indian entity after
Tatas ’ Corus deal, would make
Sunil Mittal-led Bharti the world’s
seventh largest mobile operator
with a total subscriber base of
about 179 million. It would have
estimated revenues of $13 billion.
Fuel Deregulation
In a hugely debated step, the
government deregulated fuel
prices under the
recommendations by the Kirit
Parekh Committee. Petrol prices
will no longer be subsidized,
although diesel, kerosene and
LPG will continue to be
subsidized, albeit at a slightly
lower level. Few analysts feel that
the step might further increase
the inflation. However in spite of
stiff opposition from its allies and
BJP, the Prime Minsiter said the
decision was a much-needed
reform.
Choppy Markets
Robust economy and corporate
earnings drove the Sensex to a
ten-week high on June 26. The
midcap and small cap companies
have outperformed the blue-chip
companies in the fiscal so far. But
overall theSensex has been
hovering around 17,000 this
year. Market analysts predict the
Sensex to see an earnings
growth of 25-30% this fiscal.
Gold prices didn’t ease much and
reached another high of $1260/
ounce.

ab bus kar yaar...!
Almost every Indian city has a
form of public transport that gets
romanticised and gets written
about in various travel guides as
a must-do thing. Calcutta has its
trams and hand-pulled rickshaws
(until not too long ago). Bombay
has its crowded local trains.
Chennai has its auto-rickshaws,
where economists are still trying
to figure out how the pricing
model works. Delhi has the BMWs
that belong to some minister’s
son. But Bangalore has none of
that. No trams, no hand-pulled
rickshaws, or cycle rickshaws
even. No local trains, unless you
are talking to clever college
students who have worked out
that if they know their train
timings well, they can do City-KR
Puram much faster by a train
heading to Tamil Nadu than by
any other means. And for free,
too! Of course, eerie looking
cement pylons that have replaced
the rain trees in Bangalore
threaten to bring in a Metro train
revolution, but I will not believe it
until I actually see a train run on
one of those knives-and-forks
arrangements.
But those travel-writer hacks do
not know everything, do they?
Bangalore ’s public transport bus
service is one of its best kept
secrets (keeping a public service
secret kind of defeats the
purpose, but what to do?) BMTC
(There are some who still prefer
to call it BTS, but that brings to
mind images of fiery red cuboids
of death and so I will stick to
calling it BMTC.) It is only of late
that BMTC is trying to let people
know that they exist, and that
people should be using their
buses. Today, the 6th of July is
the 6th edition of ‘Bus Day’, a
once-a-month initiative where
people are goaded to travel in
the comfort of the numerous
Volvo buses that BMTC operates.
For most people, it is these Volvo
buses that define Bangalore ’s
bus services. Especially the ones
who cannot read Kannada, they
become selectively blind to all
buses that do not have a
scrolling digital marquee of
names ITPL, Electronic City,
Koramangala, etc on their
number-boards. They do not
know what they are missing out
on. In Bangalore, given its ever-
temperate weather, sitting in an
AC bus with tinted windows can
never be the optimal way to take
in the sights, smells and sounds
of the city.
So here’s a simple 2-step plan for
all of them (it will work just as
well for the others, the ones who
already know Bangalore well too)
. Do it on a lazy weekend, you will
enjoy it –
Step 1 – Find out if you stay
within Bangalore city as defined
by BMTC (well, BTS actually).
Here ’s how you do it – walk to
the nearest bus stop from
wherever you are staying. (If you
do not have a bus stop less than
500 meters from where you stay,
you are definitely outside
Bangalore city limits, you can skip
to Step 2 directly). Once there,
wait for an hour and observe all
the buses that pass by. If you
spot any bus numbered less than
or equal to 200 (buses with any
prefix, say K, MBS, TR, etc, are
disqualified), then
congratulations, you are inside
city limits. If all the buses are
numbered 210 and above, you
are in what the BMTC calls the
mofussil. Don ’t get too
disheartened, it is not all that
bad.
Step 2 – If you found yourself to
be inside the city in Step 1, just
get into any bus and ask for ‘last
stop’. You will either end up at
one of BMTC’s hubs (Majestic,
Market, Shivajinagar) or you
won’t. In case of the former, just
catch any bus that is numbered
less than 200 (except 129 and
150 – those are hub-to-hub).
Otherwise, walk around, eat a
Masala Dosa at a Darshini, have a
strong coffee at another, and
either get back to the bus stop
you disembarked at, or any other
bus stop that you spot nearby.
Repeat the process until you
want to call it a day.
If you found yourself outside the
city in Step 1, just be more
careful that your first step takes
you to one of the hubs. If you
have lots of time, it doesn ’t really
matter, but I would not want you
to dismiss Bangalore as an
agrarian economy after ending
up at Hesaraghatta, or Budigere,
so it is better you try to reach
either of Majestic, Market or
Shivajinagar.
I’m sure the wise ones among
you might have noticed that this
2-step process makes no
mention of completing the loop
by getting back home. It is
intentional. By the end of your
bus-hopping day, if you are
resourceful enough, you would
have figured out how to.
I am sure you can do something
on these lines in every big city in
India. I have done it in Bombay
and Madras – they were not as
enjoyable as the Bangalore bus-
rides were, but there is no better
way to ‘learn’ a city. Or surprise a
local in conversation. Well, happy
bus-hopping!
